The Kingdom of Thailand covers 517,000 sq km and is home for 62 million people which are mainly Thai, about 11% Chinese, 3.5% Malay and minorities like Mon, Khmer, Phuan and Karen. 95% of all Thai citizens are Buddhists with a small group of Muslims mainly living in the south near the border to Malaysia.

Head of the state is King Bhumibol Adulyadej or Rama IX as he is also called. The power of the Thai king is comparable to the one of Queen Elisabeth II of the United Kingdom. The absolute monarchy was ended by the “revolution” 1932. Since then Thailand is a constitutional monarchy with a lot of changes in the constitution and many struggles finding its way to the present form.

Prohibited is the import of illegal drugs, ammunition and firearms like in most others countries as well. Also not allowed is bringing in pornographic material.

There are two daily English newspapers for Thailand, The Bangkok Post and The Nation. Check their online service if you want to get an idea what is going on in Thailand before you travel. Both newspapers have online sections with English learning material. The Bangkok Post additionally offers material to learn Thai language.

Illegal drugs

The import and possession is forbidden. Please notice that even if you are offered illegal substances at many places and or see people, Thais and foreigners, consuming them, stay away as the penalties are severe and being a foreigner is most likely a disadvantage if caught.
