New Movie Ratings

By mid August new movie ratings will take effect in Thailand:

  • “Sor” (from song serm that means “promoted”) for educational films people are encouraged to see
  • “Thor” (from thua pai meaning “general”) for films suitable for the general audience
  • “Nor 13+” (Nor is from naenam meaning “advisory”) for films suitable for those over 13
  • “Nor 15+”;
  • “Nor 18+”
  • “Chor 20+” (Chor is from chapor that means “specific”) for films restricted for persons under 20, and
  • films that are banned from showing in Thailand.

3 things you find in every Thai house

Buddha RoomIn nearly all Thai houses you find a Buddha room, or if they are less wealthy at least a Buddha corner, with several Buddha statues, candles and incense sticks.

King Rama V.And most houses also have a corner for King Rama V., who is worshiped like a god by most Thais.

And at least a picture of the current king, King Rama IX or Bhumibol Adulyadej. This year Thailand celebrates the 61st year of his accession to throne on June 9, 1946.

Takraw – A Thai Sport

When thinking of typical Thai sports, what immediately comes to mind is Thai boxing, but have you ever heard of Takraw?

It’s played by 2 teams of either 2 or 3 players on a court that looks like a volleyball court. The net is a bit lower. The hard rattan ball used may only be touched by feet or head. This fast game takes a lot of practize.

Boys play it during their school breaks, and serious competitions are held during every kind of local festival.

Green Curry – spicy (Gaeng Kiau Wan)

Ingredients for 4 – 6 persons:

500 g pork or beef
little bit salt
1/2 green and 1/2 red chilli
200 g Thai Aubergines ( other aubergine will do if not available)
Handful of Basil leaves (Bai Horapha / lat.: Ocimum basilicum)
400 ml Coconut milk (unsweetened)
2 spoons Green Curry paste
3-4 spoons Fishsauce
3-4 spoons sugar
